If your teeth are in poor shape due to accidental injury, decay, or age-related wear and tear, you can make them new again with dental crowns. Crowns can transform your second-rate smile into one that exudes confidence and beauty. Crowning compromised teeth will restore their shape, function, and appearance to give your smile a much-needed boost. You can obtain crowns for teeth at Smile Today Dental in Glenview, Illinois. The answers to the following questions about crowns will give you a better idea of what to expect from this restorative treatment.
Crowns are hollow, tooth-shaped caps that can be placed over fragile or damaged teeth to support their vulnerable structure. These caps are customized for each tooth to ensure a proper fit without compromising your bite. Made of durable metal alloys, gold, ceramic, or porcelain material, crowns serve to protect and support weak or damaged teeth. Ceramic and porcelain crowns will also restore your tooth’s esthetics.
You may need to crown a tooth that’s badly decayed and can’t be treated solely with a dental filling. Damaged teeth can be crowned to relieve painful chewing and keep them from further breakage. Dr. Kidonakis and the team may recommend crowning a weak tooth with a fragile structure to avoid further damage. A few other occasions where a crown would be needed are to reinforce a root canal tooth, support a fixed dental bridge, or replace a missing tooth as part of a dental implant.
Traditional dental crowns take at least two dental appointments. On your first appointment, Dr. Kidonakis and the team will evaluate your tooth to see if a crown is the best option for treatment. If so, we’ll prepare your tooth to receive a crown. If your tooth is decayed, the diseased portions will be removed. Damaged teeth may need modification to accommodate a crown. Once your tooth is prepared, we’ll take impressions of it and send them to a lab where crowns are fabricated. While you wait for your permanent crown to be made, a temporary crown will be put over your tooth to protect it from further harm. When your permanent crown is ready, approximately two weeks later, we’ll schedule your second appointment to have the temporary crown replaced with the permanent one to finalize your treatment.
A crowned tooth can be used like a regular tooth for biting and chewing as the crown takes on these forces. However, some foods, like hard candies, taffy, caramel, and other sticky foods, should be avoided altogether.
Crowns don’t need special care. Diligent oral hygiene and routine dental cleanings are all that’s needed to keep your crown in good health.
