Invisalign Teeth Straightening: Is It Right for You?

Invisalign Aligners in Glenview IL Area

Invisalign aligners have made a huge splash over the years due to their comfort, convenience, and success rate in straightening crooked teeth. Invisalign teeth straightening aligners give you an alternative to metal brackets and wires to achieve straighter, healthier teeth. Working closely with an experienced orthodontist from Smile Today Dental in Glenview, Illinois, is the best way to determine if Invisalign is a good fit for you.

Is Invisalign Right for You?

An evaluation by Dr. Evelyn Kidonakis and our team is the first step in determining if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign treatment. We’ll inspect your teeth and gums, check your oral health, and assess the problems you’d like to fix to see if Invisalign is up to the task. Although Invisalign aligners can work wonders in correcting most orthodontic issues, there are situations where traditional braces would be a better choice. The success of Invisalign also depends a lot on you and your diligence in following through with the conditions of your treatment.

Generally speaking, you could be a good candidate for Invisalign if:

  • You Don’t Have Complex Orthodontic Issues
For the most part, Invisalign can correct most problems with crooked or misaligned teeth, gaps between teeth, overcrowding, and bite issues. Complex cases, however, may be beyond the ability of Invisalign to fix. Dr. Kidonakis and our team will assess every case individually to determine the best treatment to suit your orthodontic needs.
  • You Have All Your Adult Teeth
Invisalign works best when all your adult teeth have come in, as we can create a clear-cut treatment plan to get the results you desire. If you still have some baby teeth in place, we’ll discuss orthodontic options to rectify this concern before considering Invisalign.
  • You’re Committed to Your Treatment
Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign aligners can be removed at any time. Although this is a convenience, it could also pose a problem for forgetful people or people who don’t take their treatment seriously. For Invisalign aligners to work, you must commit to their use of 20 to 22 hours daily. That leaves a few hours a day for eating, teeth brushing, and maybe a special occasion where pictures are taken. If you’re unwilling to comply with these restrictions, you’re better suited for traditional braces to straighten your teeth.
  • You’re Diligent with Your Oral Hygiene
Good oral hygiene is a must for Invisalign candidates to avoid problems with decay or oral infections that can derail their timeline for completing treatment. You’ll also need to keep your aligners clean so they continue to function properly.
  • You Don’t Smoke or Use Tobacco Products
You can’t smoke or use tobacco products when wearing your aligners, as it can interfere with the success of your treatment. Smoking is also bad for your teeth and defeats the purpose of improving your smile in the first place.
