Below are some of the more frequently asked questions regarding Botox injections from our team at Smile Today Dental!
Botox, or Botulinum toxin, is described as a neurotoxic protein commonly used in cosmetic and medical procedures to temporarily paralyze facial muscles and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Botox injections are one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments worldwide and can be provided by aestheticians, dermatologists, and even dentists!
Botox injections work by preventing the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that signals the muscles to contract. By blocking this signal, Botox essentially causes temporary muscle paralysis, smoothing out wrinkles and reducing the appearance of fine lines. The effects of Botox typically last three to six months before another treatment is needed.
Yes, Botox has been successfully approved by the FDA for various medical purposes, including treating:
Drs. Evelyn Kidonakis and Jinyoung “Anny” Yoo of Smile Today Dental use Botox medically to treat temporomandibular joint disorder, otherwise referred to as TMJ or TMD. This condition affects both the jaw joint and muscles, causing stiffness, pain, and difficulty chewing or opening the mouth. Botox can help relax the muscles and alleviate these symptoms for those suffering from TMJ.
As with any medical or aesthetic procedure, there is always a risk of side effects with Botox injections. Some common side effects include pain, bruising, and swelling at the injection site. Other common side effects may include headache, nausea, and temporary drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow.
Our providers are excited to also use Botox for cosmetic purposes in patients who visit their office. These injections are carefully administered to target specific facial muscles, smoothing out wrinkles and creating a more youthful appearance. Some common areas where Botox is used cosmetically include the forehead, between eyebrows (frown lines), and around the eyes (crow’s feet).
