Has your tooth been causing you trouble lately? Is it giving off that aching, throbbing vibe that refuses to go away? If you have been told you need a root canal, it is not as scary as it sounds, especially when Drs. Evelyn Kidonakis and Jinyoung “Anny” Yoo at Smile Today Dental in Glenview, Illinois, are here to guide you through the procedure step by step. Root canal therapy can save a tooth from discomfort and get you back to smiling in no time.
Let’s break it down into simple, friendly steps so you know exactly what to expect.
Your comfort is our priority. During your appointment, you receive a local anesthetic to ensure the area is completely numb. You will not feel anything during the procedure, except perhaps some gentle pressure. This step is all about ensuring you are relaxed and ready to proceed. You can even bring headphones to tune into your favorite podcast or music playlist during treatment.
Our dentists will examine your tooth and the surrounding area thoroughly to confirm that a root canal is indeed the right solution. An X-ray is typically taken to obtain a clear view of the affected tooth and its root anatomy. This ensures that they know exactly what’s going on beneath the surface.
Once everything is numbed and planned out, it is time for the real work to begin! A small opening is made on the surface of the affected tooth to reach the infected or damaged pulp inside. This is how the infected pulp is addressed and removed.
Now for the deep cleaning. Using specialized tools, Drs. Kidonakis and Yoo gently remove the infected or damaged tissues in the tooth’s canals. Afterward, the canals are cleaned thoroughly and disinfected to ensure that any lingering bacteria are wiped out.
After cleaning, the canals are carefully filled with a biocompatible material that seals them off and prevents any future infections. This is a crucial step in maintaining the structural integrity of your tooth and promoting long-term oral health.
Once the root canal work is complete, a temporary or permanent filling is placed to seal the opening made earlier. If needed, a dental crown is placed during a later visit to protect and strengthen the tooth. By the end of the process, your tooth will be as good as new!
