In the past, and at some dental offices today, silver amalgam fillings are still used to fill areas of decay. This material, which is comprised of approximately 50% mercury, is toxic to the body and can result in mercury toxicity–often associated with neurological changes. Fortunately, many dentists avoid this material and instead use composite resin, which is safer and just as effective in treating a cavity while looking great!
Composite resin is a material commonly used in many areas of dentistry as it can be made to match one’s natural tooth color and is entirely safe for use with the human body. It is made of plastic and glass materials and can be shaped and cured in the smile for cosmetic or restorative purposes. It can be completed in a single visit, ensuring fast and easy restoration of a natural tooth after decay has developed.
Tooth decay needs to be treated promptly to reduce the potential risk of further damage to the smile. Silver amalgam fillings tend to both expand and contract, leaving areas where bacteria can enter the tooth and increase one’s risk of infection. It is also dark and highly noticeable, making patients self-conscious about their smile’s appearance when fillings are placed. Fortunately, composite resin is attractive, not subjected to temperature changes, and will not put one’s health at risk. Additionally, it is completed quickly and affordably at Smile Today Dental with Drs. Evelyn Kidonakis and Jinyoung “Anny” Yoo.
