Understanding the Role of Routine Dental Cleanings in Your Oral Health

Routine Dental Cleaning in Northfield IL area

Welcome to Smile Today Dental, your trusted office for comprehensive dental hygiene services in Northfield, Illinois, and the surrounding areas. Our dental team is dedicated to improving oral health tailored to your unique dental needs. So, if you are due for a routine dental cleaning, visit our office today for quality care.

What to expect during professional dental cleanings

Dental cleaning is one of the most routine procedures in dentistry. It’s like home brushing but more thorough and effective for accumulated dental calculus. The procedure starts with a dental exam to check for signs of cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, etc. Since some issues, such as impacted wisdom teeth, bone loss, and cysts, can’t be spotted with the naked eye, we’ll have dental X-rays taken to have an all-rounded view of your oral health.

After the dental exam, it’s time for our dental hygienist to show their cleaning skills on your pearly whites. Using a dental scaler, the dental hygienist will gently clean all the surfaces of your teeth to remove surface stains and built-in plaque and tartar. When you notice us spending more time on a particular tooth, it means there is a large deposit of tartar that needs removal.

After scaling, we’ll use a turbo-powered toothbrush with gritty toothpaste to remove any traces of dental calculus left. The final step is to rinse your mouth to dislodge any debris. And there you have it! Your dental cleaning is now complete. Make a conscientious effort to brush and floss your teeth diligently between now and your next appointment. We assure you that your next cleaning will be quicker.

I brush daily. Should I still see a dentist?

If you diligently clean your teeth at home, it’s easy to assume routine dental cleanings have no role in your dental care. However, your oral hygiene regimen is never complete without routine dental cleanings.

Although you may be thorough in brushing and flossing, reaching all areas of your mouth is virtually impossible. Your teeth are riddled with tiny grooves and hidden spots that your home tools can’t access. The dental hygienist has the equipment and training to access all areas in the mouth, including the “tricky” spots.

Benefits of preventive dental cleanings

A dental cleaning offers numerous benefits, including the following:

  • Prevents gum disease, decay, and bad breath
  • Protects your overall health
  • Detects oral problems early
  • Removes surface stains and unsightly tartar for a beautiful smile
  • Saves treatment costs down the line
  • Prepares your teeth for other procedures like veneers and bonding

Regular dental cleanings are an essential component of preventive dental care. Provided you consistently observe personal oral care, dental cleanings effectively preserve your smile’s beauty and function.
